It’s just 400 odd days to go for the next Summer Olympics to be conducted in Japan. The Summer Olympics has come to Japan after nearly 56 years, since 1964, when it was the first Asian country to host the prestigious games.

As per the Olympic organizers, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics is “the most innovative ever organized, and will rest on three fundamental principles to transform the world: striving for your personal best (achieving your personal best); accepting one another (unity in diversity); and passing on a legacy for the future (connecting to tomorrow)”.

The Olympic Agenda 2020 spells out the guidelines to be followed in all aspects of the games. One of the main agenda is to “Maximise synergies with Olympic Movement stakeholders to ensure seamless organization and reduce costs”. The Tokyo Games will therefore use as many existing competition venues as possible, mainly those built for the Games in 1964, such as the prestigious Nippon Budokkan for judo, the Baji Koen Park for equestrian events, and the Yoyogi National Gymnasium for handball.

The Tokyo National Stadium, where the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletics competitions will be staged, will be completely revamped and replaced by a new arena. The old stadium was demolished in May 2015 and construction of the new stadium started in December 2016.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will see nearly 11,000 athletes participating in 339 events in 33 different sports encompassing 50 disciplines. The Olympic games remains one among the few World events that have the power to bring different people together, a true “unity in diversity”.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic coins

2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS SILVER SERIES 1 COIN

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics Silver coin portrays swimming in this first series of the Olympics coins. The coin also shows ‘Ryusui’ patterns in the design. The ‘Ryusui’ is a kind of undulating pattern of flowing water that is seen in most pottery, bell-shaped bronzewares and wooden products from the Yayoi period in Japanese history.

The obverse of the 40mm coin depicts swimmers weaving across the coin’s surface, surrounded by a traditional Japanese ‘Ryusui’ pattern, symbolising the flow of water. On the reverse, the official Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 emblem appears in full color, with depictions of cherry blossoms and gingko leaves to represent Tokyo.

2020 TOKYO OLYMPICS GOLD SERIES 1 COIN

The 26mm gold Proof coin is an exceptional coin that celebrates the Japanese culture. The Yabusame is a type of archery on horseback that was established during the Kamakura period (1192-1333). The archer shoots three ‘turnip headed’ arrows successively at three wooden targets. Yabusame is still performed in the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū in Kamakura and Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto.

The obverse of this coin depicts a yabusame archer with bow and arrow poised. Beside him are the kanji characters for spirit, technique and physical strength - a perfect summation of the philosophy of sport. Meanwhile, the reverse features the official Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 emblem. The Gold Proof Coin has a mintage of just 40,000 coins and very few have trickled out of Japanese shores.
