2018 Apostle Islands National Lakeshore coin

America the Beautiful Quarters 2018 is the 9th installment of a set of 5 beautiful coins being released by the U.S. mint since 2010. This year the ATB quarters honor Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Voyageurs National Park, Cumberland Island National Seashore, and Block Island National Wildlife Refuge. This post looks at the 2018 Apostle Islands Lake shore coin.

Apostle Islands lake shore in the northern tip of Wisconsin is home to 21 islands and is on the shore of Lake Superior. Almost all islands (except for Madeline Island) is covered under the National Lakeshore. The Islands are known for theirmany beaches, cliffs, sandstone sea caves, old lighthouses and ship wrecks! The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was established in 1970.

Apostle Islands shipwrecks

Lake Superior, one of the largest, cleanest and coldest of the Great Lakes has it's share of notorious shipwrecks. One of the famous shipwrecks is of theLucerne,a commercial schooner that sankin the lake, off Long Island in 1886.

Lucerne, the 59 m long schooner, started from her home port Ashland, Wisconsin on November 15, 1886 with 1,200 tons of iron ore. She was bound for Cleveland, Ohio. William Mack, part owner ofLucerne,was concerned when the ship didn't arrive back at Ashland on the expected date. When a search vessel was sent out, they found theLucerneunder water with three masts sticking out. Three crew members were frozen solid in these masts.Lucernehad found her end because of a snowstorm on November 18th 1886.

The shipwreck site was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.MoonlightandOttawaareotherships that sank in Lake Superior and the shipwreck sites are included in the National Register of Historic places.

Apostle Islands lighthouses

Apostle Islands has eight lighthouses that are historical sites and worth visiting. These lighthouses have guided ships in the sea-like Lake Superior for over a century. The Sand Island Lighthouse is one of the famous lighthouses in the islands. The other lighthouses are the lighthouse on Raspberry Island, Old and New Michigan Island Lights, NewLa Pointe LightandChequamegon Point Lighton Long Island,Devils Island Light, andOuter Island Light.

The Apostle Islands Lakeshore 2018 coin is the second release this yearfrom the five America the Beautiful quarters.

The Apostle Islands Lakeshore 2018 America the Beautiful quarter design depicts the sea caves at Devils Island with the lighthouse in the background and a kayaker paddling in the foreground. The inscriptions in the coin are "APOSTLE ISLANDS," "WISCONSIN," "2018," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
