On April 30, 2008 South Carolina had an official auction of its own state currency from the late 1800’s. They auctioned off their Bond Scrip notes issued in 1873. These notes were fully redeemed and hand canceled on the back of each note by the county clerk with his or her mark. Some marks were attractive cursive done decades ago while others have the official circular seal by the county. Within this auction there was a total of 6,164 notes but only 1,291 pieces survived intact with the historic script markings on the reverse. Out of those pieces 77 complete sets were made. The set included 6 notes: $1 Covered Wagon/Cotton Pickers, $2 The Palmetto Girls/Shipping cotton, $5 Sweet Potato Dinner w/ Francis Marion, $10 The Princess Rescue w/ General Moultrie, $20 1776 Minuteman, and $50 President George Washington. Those complete sets were sold out immediately but we have found a small hoard of extra notes from this historic auction.
Today you can own the $2 Palmetto Girls bond from this collection at an incredible price!.
