During WWII, the U.S. Government melted many coins for their use in the war effort, and this temporarily changed the way coins were Minted. In 1943, the penny was made out of steel rather than copper. Each of these “steelies” feature a profile of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, and the legendary “wheat ears” design on the reverse. Coins are in average circulated condition.
